  • Helena Bryn-McLeod, Principal

    Helena began her journey at the Salt Spring Centre School in 1994 as a kindergarten student, and has come full circle this year to join the team as principal. Helena taught Grades 6-9 in Surrey and Nelson for seven years, becoming a school counsellor, and eventually a clinical counsellor in 2022. She has a Bachelors in Sociology and History, a Bachelors in Education, and a Masters in Counselling Psychology with a focus in complex trauma and social justice. Helena is passionate about relational leadership and strives to bring safety, connection, and belonging to the students, staff, and community of Salt Spring Centre School. With a passion for neuroscience and growth mindset, Helena believes in uncovering the unique gift of every child and helping them see it for themselves.

  • Daniel Squizzato, Owl Teacher

    Daniel joined the Salt Spring Centre School community in 2017 as a teacher on call, before taking a full-time role in 2021. He has also worked with Salt Spring youth as a TOC in School District 64, a program facilitator with The Circle, a soccer referee/coach and through community theatre productions. With a professional background in journalism and creative writing, Daniel is keen on using storytelling to create meaningful connections between students’ lives, the curriculum and the wider world. Daniel’s teaching style incorporates humour, spontaneity and flexibility, while also cultivating the curiosity, critical thinking and social-emotional skills that will help his students thrive in today’s world. He believes in creating a classroom culture where everyone can feel safe to be their authentic selves while also contributing to our collective goals.

  • Meg Burton, Quail Teacher

    Meg joined the Salt Spring Centre School as the Quail teacher in the fall of 2023, moving here from her role as a kindergarten teacher in Victoria. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Victoria, and is currently working on her post-degree in Early Childhood Education. She is passionate about staying current with the latest research in education, with special interests in open-ended play, outdoor education, and process-based art.
    Meg's teaching philosophy centers on the idea that childhood is a precious time for discovery, wonder, and growth. She believes in the value of allowing children to be children, embracing their natural sense of wonder and joy. By incorporating play into her teaching, Meg not only strives to help children develop academic skills but also foster their social-emotional development, problem-solving abilities, and love for learning.

  • Shauna Klem, Administrator

    Shauna has lived on Salt Spring for over 30 years, and she has enjoyed being a member of the school community for nearly two decades. All three of her children thrived at the Centre School, and Shauna served as Chair of the Board of Directors for nine years before taking on the role of Administrator. Her strong organizational and communication skills are crucial in keeping things running smoothly at the school, but if you ask the students what she does, they’ll say that she is the keeper of the Band-Aids.
